Program Name: BA(Hons) Criminology & Criminal Justice
Host City: Preston
Description: This course provides a comprehensive study of the nature of crime, criminality and responses to crime in contemporary society. The degree has compulsory CORE elements with optional modules that allow students to study areas of individual interest. The degree provides three inter-related areas of study within Criminology & Criminal Justice, supplemented by an inter-disciplinary element. First, a strong theoretical underpinning concerning the nature of crime, criminality and theoretical frameworks provided in core modules with further options available. Second, a critical examination of problematic issues and areas such as 'drugs', 'youth crime', 'gender' and 'race'. Third, a critical analysis of criminal justice agencies and current crime and penal policy issues such as 'prisons', 'crime prevention' or 'cops in context'. The inter-disciplinary element in year one allows students to pursue further options in introductory law or psychology related to crime. Core modules ensure that students have the required academic background and skills to complete an in depth dissertation of an approved topic of their own choice in their final year.
