Program Name: AIU London Interior Design
Host City: London
Description: Associate of Arts in Interior Design
In spite of the recent do-it-yourself trend in home improvement, the demand for interior designers remains strong. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment opportunities for interior designers will continue to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. They contend that economic expansion, growing homeowner wealth, and an increased interest in interior design will drive demand for designers. However, individuals with little or no formal training in interior design, as well as those lacking creativity and perseverance, will find it very difficult to establish and maintain a career in this field.

The Associate of Arts in Interior Design is taught by professional interior designers and is structured to produce a highly qualified graduate with the ability to enter directly into the interior design field. The program is structured to help prepare students to enter the real world, where they will be expected to develop design concepts for interior spaces and transform these concepts into practical, functional, yet innovative and exciting environments that meet the needs of clients.

Challenging, Relevant Coursework
The Associate of Arts in Interior Design features industry-relevant coursework taught by faculty members with real-world experience in the field. Through this degree program, students will have the opportunity to use computer-aided design technology to develop and enhance their individual projects. Some of the key topics covered in the program include color theory, drawing and sketching, uses of textiles, design principles, lighting, and building codes.

Students who successfully complete the program should be able to:
  • The start of a portfolio of student work.
  • Good communication skills (verbal, written, conventional drafting and CAD).
  • Good manner and approach to problem solving (general and design specific).
  • Research and critical thinking skills.
  • The basis of preparation for lifelong learning.
  • Increased employment opportunities.
